First thing to do with the pi board

One of my issues after I got the raspberry pi board was I can’t do the remote thru ssh. After done the OS installation, by default the ssh server was not running, that’s why i need this kind of pc mode like monitor and keyword, so I can do type and see the what’s going on inside the board. Now, I can full control of it, great! Ok, first thing first. I need to upgrade the kernel OS inside, so far I’m using the Raspbian “Wheezy” provide by So far the OS is running smoothly, but by default it was very old kernel, like version 2.x.x. So, how to do the kernel upgrade? I go to this link, it provide the fastest and easiest way. Please find the following upgrade steps below :

  1. Login to the board
  2. Install the git core module $ sudo apt-get install git-core
  3. Install the rpi-update app $ sudo wget -O /usr/bin/rpi-update && sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/rpi-update
  4. Execute the script $ sudo rpi-update
  5. Done

Quite easy and clean, after I done the upgrade, I have linux kernel version 3.6.11, cool!

Noted that i avoid the step to do like $ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade straight away from the current distro, because some of the failed was failed and it end up with the mess, don’t know why.
